It will cover the benefits that come with the major social welfare programs that attempt to positively enhance lifestyles for the poverty-stricken. Its intention is to inform you that these programs provided are put to good use and your tax money along with federal funds are not going to waste, as many citizens seem to disagree. Poverty, welfare, and health care go hand in hand. Texans who fall below the poverty line are more likely to become ill due to poor health and the quality of life they are living. Welfare seems to be the solution to this issue. Welfare provides Texans enough funds of financial assistance to provide what is barely enough for their families. There are an abundant amount of social welfare programs, to help insure a form of stability in these homes. Poverty in Texas Since the beginning of time there has been separation of economic classes; the poor, middle class, working class, and upper class. Most people are considered or identifies as middle class or the working class. The poor are people who fall below the poverty line. Middle class accounts for most people. The working class falls just below the middle class. The upper class account for a small percent of our citizens. The upper class is people whose income totals up to 150,000 or more per year. Frees Fear in Cuckoos Nest and The Scarle Essay Example For Students

Frees Fear in Cuckoos Nest and The Scarle Essay t Letter comparison compare contrast essays One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest and The Scarlet Letter To Live With Fear To live with fear and not be overcome by it is the final test of maturity. This test has been taken by various literary characters. Chief Bromden in Ken Keseys One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest and Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale in Hawthornes The Scarlet Letter both appear to have taken and passed this test. It first seemed as though the Chief was going to fail this test of maturity in the mental ward that he was committed to. He had locked himself up by acting deaf and dumb. He had immense fear of the Combine, or society, that ruined things and people and treated them like machines, giving orders and controlling them. Soon enough to save the Chief, McMurphy arrived. He was lively, and not scared; the complete opposite of the Chief. This courage eventually passed on to the Chief. At a meeting, when McMurphy was holding a vote to prove that the patients wanted to see the World Series, the Chief voted for it. At first he said that McMurphy controlled his hand. Later on he admitted that it was he who raised it. He even talked to McMurphy one night, and began laughing at the situation at hand. One day when McMurphy and the Chief tried to help another patient who was being taken advantage of by orderlies, they were caught and sentenced to electro-shock therapy (EST). The Chi usually blacked out in a fog when confronted with problems; however, this time (he had endured over 200 EST sessions previously) he did not. However, McMurphy was deteriorating, and the two seemed to be reversing positions. McMurphy eventually was sentenced to a lobotomy, which left him as a helpless, pathetic person, as the Chief had once been. The Chief now had the courage to put McMurphy out of his misery, despite what the head nurse, Nurse Ratched, the symbol of the combine to the Chief, would do to him. He smothered McMurphy, and afterwards, escaped by lifting the control panel, which McMurphy told him that he could lift but the Chief saw himself as small, a symbol of his strength against the combine, and breaking a window with it. The mere fact that the Chief could lift the panel was proof that he had become bigger, even than McMurphy, who could not lift it. By confronting his fear and dealing with it, the Chief passed his test of maturity. Reverend Dimmesdale also lived in fear. Fear that one day he would be found out as the father of the child of Hester Prynne, and an adulterer. If he was found out, he could not serve his purpose on this earth: Relaying Gods word to the people. He feared that if found out, he would be humiliated like Hester was. Also, he feared that Chillingworth, Hesters husband, would take revenge upon him for corrupting her. Dimmesdale eventually faced his fears, and in front of the townspeople, he, Hester, and Pearl, their daughter, got up on the scaffolding that was used to punish Hester, and confessed to his crimes. He passed his test of maturity because he confronted the fear, and was not overcome by it, (although it almost did overcome him: His health was failing rapidly due to his guilty conscience). He knew that he would be humiliated, and that he was to leave town with Hester that very day, but he confessed anyway. His confession shows his maturity and proves that he passed the test. A test of maturity is whether or not one is overcome by the fear they live with. .uef88034ab55eb0f9224d1e5ecc0f76d9 , .uef88034ab55eb0f9224d1e5ecc0f76d9 .postImageUrl , .uef88034ab55eb0f9224d1e5ecc0f76d9 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uef88034ab55eb0f9224d1e5ecc0f76d9 , .uef88034ab55eb0f9224d1e5ecc0f76d9:hover , .uef88034ab55eb0f9224d1e5ecc0f76d9:visited , .uef88034ab55eb0f9224d1e5ecc0f76d9:active { border:0!important; } .uef88034ab55eb0f9224d1e5ecc0f76d9 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uef88034ab55eb0f9224d1e5ecc0f76d9 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uef88034ab55eb0f9224d1e5ecc0f76d9:active , .uef88034ab55eb0f9224d1e5ecc0f76d9:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uef88034ab55eb0f9224d1e5ecc0f76d9 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uef88034ab55eb0f9224d1e5ecc0f76d9 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uef88034ab55eb0f9224d1e5ecc0f76d9 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uef88034ab55eb0f9224d1e5ecc0f76d9 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uef88034ab55eb0f9224d1e5ecc0f76d9:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uef88034ab55eb0f9224d1e5ecc0f76d9 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uef88034ab55eb0f9224d1e5ecc0f76d9 .uef88034ab55eb0f9224d1e5ecc0f76d9-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uef88034ab55eb0f9224d1e5ecc0f76d9:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Earth Art - Creating Art from Nature Essay The Chief and Dimmesdale are two literary characters who lived in fear and overcame it. Informal Logic

Human beings are endowed with a unique ability; that of being able to reason rationally and logically. However, man’s reasoning is from time to time characterized by errors in reasoning, particularly when presenting arguments (Moore Parker, 2007, p. 40). Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Informal Logic-Fallacies Definition specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Most instances, these errors in reasoning may follow a common pattern hence forming logical fallacies. There are hundreds of logical fallacies that can be identified depending on their different patterns. Ambiguous claims and the two types of fallacies which originate from problems with ambiguity are composition and division. Ambiguity in reasoning has been identified as one of the most common fallacy that people commit in their day to day engagements. A statement is said to be ambiguous if it can be interpreted in different ways. Ambiguity is characteriz ed by the use of words which ordinarily have more than one meaning. In most instances, ambiguous claims are not obvious. Studies in ambiguity have found that differences in definitions of key claims are at the center of ambiguous statements (Moore Parker, 2007, p. 48). There are different types of ambiguity. The first one is the semantic ambiguity which is characterized by the presence of an ambiguous word or phrase. For instance, if a person says that the average price of a house in the city is $100,000, it is ambiguous because of the word, average. Semantically ambiguous statements can be corrected by replacing the ambiguous word with an unambiguous word or phrase. Syntactic ambiguity is the second type of ambiguity and is normally identified by the presence of ambiguous grammar usage or the general structure of the statement. For instance, if someone says that the police saw the man with binoculars, the statement is syntactically ambiguous. The statement implies that the police were searching for a man who had binoculars or that they used binoculars to locate the man they were looking for. Syntactic ambiguity can be eliminated by restructuring the sentence and the punctuations to enhance clarity. The third type of ambiguity is referred to as the grouping ambiguity which is similar to semantic ambiguity. This ambiguity arises when a claim may be correct in a general sense but false when taken in part (Hurley, 2007, p. 71). For example, if someone claims that secretaries make more money than doctors, it is subject to grouping ambiguity (Moore Parker, 2007, p. 52). It may be true that secretaries combined make more money than doctors as a group. However, individual secretaries do not make more money than individual doctors. Hence, the ambiguity of this sentence is in the use of the words â€Å"secretaries† and â€Å"doctors†.Advertising Looking for essay on rhetoric? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More There are two major types of fallacies that emanate from problems of ambiguity. These are the fallacies of composition and division. They are both characterized by errors in distinguishing the parts from the whole of a claim. The fallacy in such claim is in believing that what is true of a group of things taken collectively is obviously true of the same things taken individually (Hurley, 2007, p. 83). For instance, a claim that since there has been a series of accidents involving vehicles is as a result of all drivers being careless suffers from the fallacy of division. On the other hand, some statements are true when taken individually but not when taken as a group or collectively. This fallacy is referred to as the fallacy of composition (Moore Parker, 2007, p. 53). For instance, a claim that since a ticket to watch a soccer match in an 80,000-sitter stadium was being sold at $2 implied that the organizers were not intent on collecting a lot of money suffers from the fallacy of composition-what is true of an individual is not necessarily true for the individuals taken collectively. Furthermore, to conclude that individual athletes constituting a winning team in the short relay are the fastest 100 meters runners/sprinters is a fallacy. This claim suffers from the fallacy of division. The success of a team in a relay race depends mostly on the strategy of arranging the team such that the subsequent participants who are handed the baton will always have a time advantage at take off as well as to overtake. The ways of minimizing, if not eliminating the semantic and syntactic ambiguities have been discussed. Fallacies arising from ambiguity together with their relevant examples have also been presented. Human being’s reasoning pattern, therefore, can only be made clearer if ambiguity in arguments and claims are eliminated. References Hurley, P. J. (2007). Audism Essays

Audism Essays Audism Essay Audism Essay My Mother and Father instilled DOD morals upon me. I was never taught to feel superior or inferior to anybody. My Mother showed me right from wrong. If I even so much as whispered a racial slur, I would have been punished harshly. But I never thought in black and white or Deaf and hearing. I knew growing up that God has the right to judge but we as humans do not. Of course growing up had curiosities and still to this day I still do, but there is a place and time to ask those questions. How could I discriminate against anybody for any reason. It would be shameful, because they could turn it back on me. Growing up I was ridiculed for being poor. My Dad worked hard but we lived within our means. My sister-in laws cousin is deaf. She wears a hearing aid and speaks. By seeing the movie, now know that she is an audits. She always feels superior to Deaf people who cannot speak and Deaf people who do not having hearing devices of some kind. That is definitely autism in the works. I remember specifically one time we were eating out all together; me, my brother, his wife, and the cousin. The cousin was making fun off girl at her work that cant speak well because she is Deaf. The cousin was just telling us the story about it. She said that her co-worker is Deaf and wears a hearing aid but doesnt speak well and that she is better than her cause she speaks. I just stayed quiet to keep the peace in my family but I knew that wasnt right. She considers herself hearing not Deaf. I told her that was taking SSL and Deaf Culture this semester and she didnt have a reaction. She just said well good luck with that. Since we come from a small town, we all grew up around each other. To try to spark some curiosity in her; always find myself telling her owe my classes are going. Maybe to change her ways of thinking. Autism should be punished by the court systems. Its sad that children and adults that are Deaf are left out of a lot of things, especially in their own families. It made me angry in the movie how they spoke of their family members saying Ill tell you later, or not important. Its just rude to exclude somebody for any reason. For English I wrote a Proposal paper on a device called order assist. Its a package that can be purchased by fast-food restaurants to make it easier for Deaf people to order through a drive-thru.

Development of Morality According to Nietzsche Essay

Development of Morality According to Nietzsche - Essay Example Moralitat or Morality for Nietzsche is the state of ‘higher’ consciousness for humankind where false conceptions about it vanish. According to him, it is a wrong morality if people would think that the things they do are good for them, instead, it should be done to transform other people and society as a whole (Mencken 65). Hence, it can be understood that Nietzsche’s moral philosophy is intended for a broader scope rather than for a personal-level of inculcation. An anti-Realist, Nietzsche objected the commonly-held view that morality is derived from the authority of religion and the statements of powerful people. He conjectured for a Morality in the Pejorative Sense (â€Å"MPS†) that encompasses his radical rationalization of the subject. The development of morality in people, consistent with Nietzsche’s writings, is fundamentally dependent on the voluntary application of ‘good’ thoughts and values. Happiness, Altruism, Equality, and C ompassion are extremely important virtues in the Nietzschean morality, while worldliness, selfishness, and cruelty are abhorred (Mencken 35-38). The moralist elucidated his moral viewpoint via his three theses on human agency. First, Nietzsche argued that human beings possess a certain power that enables them to make a free and autonomous choice (Free Will). In addition, Nietzsche warned for a regression of morals in society when free will is insufficient among people in their performance of responsible actions, if motives are not well evaluated, and if people do not agree on the interpretation and application of moral codes (Deleuze 60). His books entitled The Gay Science (2001), Thus Spoke Zarathustra (2005), Beyond Good and Evil (1966) and On the Genealogy of Morality (1994) speaks volumes of the natural proclivities of the human species to transgress their own ethics, he thus aptly deemed ‘positively intrinsic values.’ In essence, a better appreciation of Nietzsche’s unusual moral doctrine can be pulled through by examining closely his very popular, yet often mistaken, the idea of ‘people creating themselves’ (Mencken 72). Hence, it should be considered that morality is not a question of who makes the laws or codes, but a question of how these laws and codes are applied successfully to renew a seemingly evil-oriented world.

Evaluation of CAPM using American stock market data Dissertation

Evaluation of CAPM using American stock market data - Dissertation Example So investors prefer to choose mean-variance-efficient portfolios that would either minimize variance with a given expected return or would maximize expected return given variance. Thus, CAPM is a theory that defines the relationship between risk and the expected return of a security or a portfolio of securities. The theory is based on the assumption that the security market is generally composed of risk-averse investors and the type of investors who prefer and will to take more risk only when they expect to earn a higher return in commensuration with that risk. The return from an asset varies through successive periods and an asset which has a fluctuating return is considered to have greater risk. So, the tendency of investors is to diversify their investment portfolio so that they could minimize the effect of risk volatility, i.e. the unsystematic risk attached to the portfolio. Thus due to diversification only market related or systematic risk is relevant in the risk-return trade-o ff. The portion of risk volatility which is systematic, i.e. measured by the extent to which return varies with respect to the overall market, is measured by the parameter ? (Beta). Beta is a measure of risk contributed by individual securities to a well-diversified portfolio, and measured by- rA = return of the asset rM = Return of the market ?2M = variance of the return of the market cov(rA, rM) = covariance between the return of the asset and the return of the market. Beta is calculated with the help of historical returns for both the asset and the market. Assumptions of CAPM The assumptions of CAPM are- Investors in the market are concerned only about the expected return and the volatility of risk involved with their investment All investors have homogeneous idea about the concept of risk and return associated with an investment. Systematic risk factor is common to a broad-based market portfolio as systematic risk brings volatility which is non-diversifiable. So, if a securities beta can be identified, then the expected return from that security can be calculated. Economic Rationale behind CAPM and its Consistency with the regulatory and the economic standards The relationship in risk and return in CAPM is measured using- Where, Rt = the expected return on a security or a portfolio Rf = Risk-free rate of return ?i = Beta of the security or portfolio i Rm = expected return on the equity market performance The rationale behind the CAPM equation is to persuade the investors to shift their money from riskless assets to risky assets such as equity security. The usefulness of CAPM lies in the measurement of the expected return premium appropriate for an investment with respect to the risk involved relative to the market index risk. The economic explanation of the equation brings out that how risk-free rate of return (Rf) and market-wide risk premium (Rm- Rf) aid to persuade investors from investment in risk-free securities to risky securities.
